Which way do you face your fence?

Which way to face your fenceBeing a MA real estate broker, I am extra critical of other brokers and the advice and expertise they give. I recently was looking at a home for myself when I asked the broker, “who owns the fence” that separated the properties. The broker replied it was the neighbor’s fence because the good side of the fence was facing the property I was looking at. I asked why that mattered and she said,” because it’s a law in Massachusetts that you face the better side of the fence toward your neighbors”.  I stated that I had recently had a fence installed by a fence contractor in my current home and he didn’t do that.  She then said, “he must not have pulled a permit”. Not pulled a permit? He pulled a permit. I looked but haven’t found anything about a law. It’s more customary and typically people do face the better side out when it is on the front of the house. It turned out that the fence was owned by the neighbor but I haven’t been able to find anything that tells me he faced it in that direction because the state of Massachusetts required him to do so. I think I would want to be 100% sure of something before I started giving advice on the laws of a state.  If anyone knows anything differently leave a reply.
